Welcome Application Insights Users
HockeyApp was acquired by Microsoft in December of 2014 and over the last year became part of the Visual Studio product family. Another product in this family is Application Insights, which offers powerful diagnostics experiences for web service and mobile app developers. The overlap in feature set and target audience often created confusion with our customers, so we have made the decision to transition mobile and desktop apps from Application Insights to HockeyApp. Application Insights will focus on web sites and services, while HockeyApp will continue to deliver a great experience for iOS, Android, OS X and Windows developers.
With this change and the start of the migration phase, we would like to welcome Application Insights customers. We look forward to you using HockeyApp, giving us feedback, and helping us improve HockeyApp and our open-source SDKs.
Our goal is to make the move to HockeyApp as simple as possible. We are currently working on a solution that will allow you to convert your current instrumentation key from Application Insights to become a HockeyApp App ID. As both services use the same API endpoints for ingesting data, we can collect telemetry from your app without you needing to republish your app, this will also support collecting data from older versions of your apps. This solution will be available in mid-April and will make the initial transition simple. While you can continue to use the Application Insights SDK, we recommend you to adopt the HockeySDK to get the additional benefits of in-app updates, crash reports and user feedback.
To ensure that you don’t lose any data, you will need to transition your instrumentation key to HockeyApp by June 15, 2016. This will ensure that you will be able to access your data in HockeyApp after June 15. If you don’t transfer your instrumentation key by June 15, you will need to open a support request in our support system.
The easiest way to get started is to sign in with your Work or School, or Personal account. This is the same account that you used to access Application Insights with, no need to create and remember another password. Every account automatically comes with our free plan, which offers unlimited distribution, crash reporting, and feedback for 2 apps.
If you need more than this, you can sign up for our paid plans. We now offer a new purchase channel through the Visual Studio Marketplace, which lets you pay for HockeyApp through your Azure subscription. This can be the same subscription that you used to pay for Application Insights. In addition, you can also pay directly with credit card or PayPal through our payment provider FastSpring.
In addition to single-sign on with Microsoft account, you can connect your organization through our new Azure Active Directory (AAD) integration, enabling you to manage app and data access through your Active Directory. This is particularly useful when team members join or leave your company.
Finally, we want to point out our Knowledge Base, which has special sections for each supported platform. We are constantly working to improve our documentation and make sure that you have access to any answers for all of your HockeyApp questions. If our knowledge base does not have the answer you are looking for, you can always contact us through our support system and Twitter.
